May 30, 2024
It is hard to believe that this is already the last Shabbat message in May and that Lori and I are completing our third May living in South Palm Beach County. I truly feel like I have once again become a Floridian, and while I have to admit I never expected it, I have become a passionate Florida Panthers fan…and what an amazing time to be a fan! I am personally elated by Tuesday night’s overtime victory and can’t wait to continue cheering them on in game 5. GO CATS!
Here at the Adolph & Rose Levis JCC, yesterday saw a different kind of celebration as more than 30 women from the Levis JCC Sandler Center’s Women’s Wisdom Circle gathered in recognition of class instructor Liz Sterling. After over 20 years with the Levis JCC Sandler Center creating community, sharing wisdom and teaching a group of 150 women to embrace gratitude and have the strength and encouragement to make their lives meaningful, Liz will be relocating to Colorado. We didn’t say good-bye though as Liz will continue on with us virtually, and we look forward to her visiting with us in January. While the group met, the halls were busy with the installation of the Judi & Allan Schuman Museum Gallery’s Summer Exhibition, Israel: A Photographic Perspective by Benjamin Kenagen. It will be on display May 30 - September 30 and celebrates the vibrant sights in Israel in both color and black and white images.
This week’s Torah portion is Bechukotai (In My Statutes) in Leviticus, the 3rd book in the 5 books of Moses. In it, G-d promises that if the people of Israel will keep His commandments, they will enjoy material prosperity and dwell securely in their homeland. But He also delivers a harsh “rebuke,” warning of the exile, persecution and other evils that will befall them if they abandon their covenant with Him. At our Levis JCC, an extension of our homeland, we are fortunate to embrace the prosperity bestowed upon us and proudly celebrate the people and programs we bring together for this community.
