Description

This course of study will explore the tractate from the Mishnah known as “Damages” (Nezikin). This section, called Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) seems out of place. After all this Talmudic tractate deals with laws of damages, evidence, restitution of property and the legal system. Rambam teaches us that Pirkei Avot fits into this section of the Talmud because it reminds us that a legal system must be accompanied by a sense of ethics and morality. “A judge who is lacking in compassion can do great harm”. Hence, Pirkei Avot was placed within this tractate. Paul Azaroff is a master instructor in the Florence Melton Adult Mini School. He teaches Jewish Studies classes at the Sandler Center. Mr. Azaroff's goal as a Jewish educator has always been to instill a love of Yiddishkeit in his students and to make them aware of the wondrous events in Jewish history that is the heritage of each and every one who lays claim to them. 10 week course: $200
